It works! Good solutions for anti-discrimination

Creating and receiving reliable and credible news is one of the challenges of modern times. Therefore, in the coming months, we will organize a series of activities focused on the role of the media in observing and describing existing problems of human rights violations and discrimination against excluded groups and minorities.

Key challenges

1. The media is dominated by negative information. Suffering and tragedy sell better. At the same, time many people avoid reading the news because it puts them in a bad mood and gives them a sense of powerlessness about the problems reported.

2. Young people are spending more and more time on the Internet, where they confront an enormous amount of information. Moreover, they cannot assess its credibility, and fake news and hate speech are becoming increasingly common in the media — both traditional and new.

How do we address them?

To address these challenges, we will organize the following activities as part of the project:

1. School of Solutions Journalism

We will provide aspiring and beginning journalists from the Greater Poland region with tools that will help them create reliable and engaging materials on discrimination and human rights. They will also allow them to verify institutional actions in this field. At the same time, we want to deepen the journalistic social sensitivity and draw attention to the potential of solution-oriented journalism.

2. Anti-discrimination Media Education

The workshop will be conducted by a group of volunteers previously trained in this direction. It is important for us that young people are able to diagnose fake news and hate speech, and at the same time have access to information showing effective anti-discrimination measures.

3. Online public awareness campaign

Over the summer, we will launch an online public awareness campaign on one of the issues we will collectively diagnose during the School of Solutions Journalism.

The change the project seeks to bring about in the media is a greater presence of topics concerning discriminated groups. We believe that the increased interest of young journalists in areas related to human rights, discrimination and social exclusion will translate into an increase in the number of valuable materials published on these subjects. It will also be an important counterbalance to the phenomenon of spreading fake news.

We want to sensitize and equip with proper tools both those who create the content and its recipients.

Solutions journalism on anti-discrimination and human rights and media education workshops in schools are our response to hate rhetoric based on contempt and fear.
