For schools

Human Rights”, “Intercultural Learning”, “Anti-discrimination”, “Environmental Awareness” and “Refugees”

Stowarzyszenie Jeden Świat – SCI Poland cordially invites primary, lower and upper secondary schools to take part in our workshops. We offer classes based on the principles of informal education, or “learning by doing”, where games, fun and active participation are the basis for joint work on the following topics: Human Rights, Intercultural Learning, Anti-discrimination, Environmental Awareness and Refugees. If you would like to offer your students an unconventional, interesting and socially relevant educational lesson, please invite us to your class.

Workshop format – non-formal education

The workshops we offer are based on the principles of non-formal education. Informal education does not mean unorganised education, on the contrary. It is a consciously structured process, taking place outside the established system of formal education. Non-formal education enables young people to express their values and develop skills and competences different from those they may have learned in formal education.

What is special about non-formal education is the active participation of participants in the learning process. One of its most important elements is learning by doing. We give priority to such methods as: brainstorming, discussions, simulation games, art as a form of expression, individual reflections expressed in various forms of activity. Our aim is to raise young people’s awareness on selected topics. We offer them time for common discovery and exchange of opinions, which will help to fight prejudices and prepare for active citizenship.

We conduct each workshop taking into account the age of the participants, their psychomotoric abilities and their level of formal education. Group size is also an important factor in the success of our workshops – we work most effectively with groups from 6 to 20 people.

Most of our workshops are planned as 1,5 hour meetings (2 lessons). However this does not mean a time limit, on the contrary, we encourage you to take advantage of workshop cycles, i.e. several meetings spread over time, related to one topic or moving in a wider circle of topics.

Human rights

Workshops on Human Rights aim to familiarise participants with their rights at all times and in all places and with the role they play in everyday life by respecting these rights in relation to themselves and others, the possibility of defending those whose rights have been violated and the introduction to a culture of mutual respect.
Knowledge and understanding of Human Rights should form the basis for actively building civil society and developing respect for others and protection of one’s own dignity.

Intercultural learning

The term “intercultural learning” refers to the individual process of acquiring knowledge and forming attitudes and behaviour resulting from the coexistence of different cultures. In a broader context, it refers to the process necessary to shape a society in which people of different cultures live together peacefully. During the workshops, we mainly deal with issues of cultural and social diversity, their individual experience and the ways of dealing with them that are different for each of us. Participants in these workshops have the chance to get to know themselves, their own beliefs and values, as well as the place they come from and the role and importance of culture in everyone’s life.

Anti-discrimination

During anti-discrimination workshops, we encourage young people to discover the cultural diversity around them and to look for stereotypes that distort the image of reality. Together, we work on understanding the concept of stereotypes and learn about the mechanisms of their operation. In the course of interactive games, discussions and simulations, each participant has an opportunity to find out what a hostile perception is, and what the situation of discrimination looks like, which is usually caused by a stereotypical, thoughtless approach to another human being. The workshop aims to raise awareness that all of us have a tendency to use stereotypes, as they make it easier to move around in society, alleviate fear of otherness, and are the fastest, most accessible means in our minds of finding our way in different situations, and therefore we are not able to eliminate them, but we can learn to control and tame them, thanks to the awareness of their insidious effects.

Refugees

These workshops aim to raise awareness of people who have had to leave their home countries because of persecution. During the workshop, we want to raise the issues of refugee status, the causes and consequences of the refugee phenomenon and its scale in the contemporary world. Participants in the workshop learn sensitivity and understanding of the situation of people who, for various reasons, were forced to leave their country and now face the difficult task of adapting to life in a new place, in a new culture, among people speaking a foreign language.

Environmental Awarness

These workshops aim to develop an attitude of respect for the environment and consumer awareness in young people. In the course of the workshop, pupils have the opportunity to learn more about the mechanisms causing the destruction of the environment, the causes and effects of climate change and their relationship with consumer habits. The workshops allow young people to see the relationship between social justice, peace and care for the environment.

We look forward to working with you!
