School of Climate Justice

About the project

The School for Climate Justice is a free interdisciplinary course for educators, activists, science and humanities students, animators, NGO workers and volunteers. Participants will deepen their knowledge of the environmental and climate crisis with a particular focus on its impact on human rights. They will also develop their skills as trainers and in taking collective action for climate justice. Finally, they will have the opportunity to take real action as trainers and coaches leading activities for international volunteer groups and local communities in different parts of Poland. Therefore a majority of classes at the School will be conducted in English.

The project is conducted in partnership with the „Planetarians and Planetarians” group.

Topics of the School of Climate Justice?

Participants will learn:

  • how the ecological crisis (climate and enviromental) exacerbates global and local inequalities, causes and contributes to the escalation of ethnic or international conflicts, and threatens global security;
  • what are its causes and what do researchers advise us to do to prevent it from worsening;
  • why, in the face of the crisis, there is a particular need for social and international solidarity and action on behalf of groups at risk of exclusion;
  • about the importance of taking care of the environment and changing consumption trends;
  • why it makes sense to get involved in group initiatives and actions for climate justice, as well as how to organize them – and how those involved in the climate movement do it.

School of Climate Justice Schedule

The workshop program will cover two subject areas.

First, the classes will help to deepen our knowledge on the climate and ecological crisis, including their impact on the system that organizes the life of global societies and as a source of violation of fundamental human rights.

Next, we will address what activities we can undertake to effectively counteract these negative phenomena. Going beyond the rhetoric of individualization of responsibility, we will focus primarily on the systemic level of impact and, through meetings with people involved in social justice, human rights, climate and environmental protection, we will learn about concrete examples of effective group action.

Part II

Participants of the School who will attend at least 65% of the workshops will conduct — in teams of two or individually — workshops for people participating in international volunteer camps and members of the local communities and NGOs hosting them. Those workshops will be based on original scenarios for classes on acting for climate justice.

For more information about international volunteer camps (workcamps) please visit their dedicated website.

What is climate justice?

The concept of Climate Justice frames global climate change as a political and ethical issue and not just a strictly environmental one. It’s typically viewed in a global context of spatial and temporal interdependence and recognises that the most vulnerable and poorest in society often have to suffer the greatest impact of the effects of climate change. This despite those very groups being the least responsible for the emissions that have driven the climate crisis.

From the opinion of the European Economic and Social Committee on ‘Climate Justice’

Climate justice responds to the moral argument — both sides of the moral argument — to address climate change. First of all, to be on the side of those who are suffering most and are most effected. And secondly, to make sure that they’re not left behind again, when we start to move and start to address climate change with climate action (…).
